Showcasing Armidale's young rising stars! Launched by NECOM in 2022 in honour of its first string teacher, the late Marian Barford, this award supports senior students with the significant costs of furthering their musical development, with many recipients going on to study music at university.

Featuring new NECOM CEO, Andrew French-Northam (guitar), Chris Frater (saxophone), Wendy Griffiths (double bass). Christ and Andrew have been collaborating for many years, creating original music shaped by improvisation, experimentation and performance. Their compositions weave together sinewy melodies, vibrant harmonies and rich musical dialogue. The trio will revisit selected works with fresh arrangements, new textures and a few surprises along the way. Expect an adventurous and engaging evening of original music.

Enjoy live music performed by the Armidale Youth Orchestras, Armidale Youth Strings and Armidale Youth Wind Ensemble on the magnificent lawns of the historical "Booloominbah" at the University of New England. The art form of dance permeates music of the Baroque era. Early music specialists Jane Downer (baroque oboe/oboe d’amore), Margaret Caley (baroque violin) and Camilla Tafra (baroque cello) perform selections from JS Bach’s iconic suites and partitas for solo instruments, alongside Bach’s Trio Pastorale & Organ Trio BWV 529. A not-to-be-missed recital featuring two of Australia’s most compelling musicians. Pianist Konstantin Shamray, acclaimed for his fearless virtuosity and commanding artistry, joins clarinettist David Griffiths, renowned for his superb musicianship and versatility. Their program features Brahms’ Sonata in F minor, Weber’s Grand Duo, and Novacek’s Four Rags. This concert marks the first stop of their regional tour, with Armidale launching an exciting musical journey.
