SUMMARY:RSL Fundraiser: "Under a Bamboo Sky"
DESCRIPTION:**SPECIAL SCREENING** 1 NIGHT ONLY \nA tale of human connection\, hope and resilience in the face of great tragedy\, Under a Bamboo Sky\, uses new technology to bring to life the unbelievable story of Australian soldiers held prisoner by the Japanese in WWII. \nUsing their own words\, their own voices\, Under a Bamboo Sky weaves the recollections (oral testimony) of more than 60 former POWs together with newly colourised archival material and new location footage to deliver a moving\, intimate and revelatory first-hand account of their experience. \nCaptured during the Japanese offensive and imprisoned in Singapore’s Changi Barracks\, the film follows the three-year journey of these soldiers through four countries: subjected to slave labour building the Thai Burma Railway\, shipwrecked at sea\, and sent down coalmines in Japan on the outskirts of Nagasaki. After bearing witness to some of WWII’s most history-defining events\, they tell of returning home to families\, wives and sweethearts after years away\, and of the price they paid for the trauma they endured. \nShining through the horrors of war is the spirit of these men who\, remarkably\, demonstrate an inspiring human capacity to find beauty in their surroundings and hold onto hope in the worst of circumstances. Under a Bamboo Sky is their story. \nProduced by WildBear Entertainment in recognition of the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII\, financed with the assistance of the ACT Government and Screen Canberra\, The Returned & Services League of Australia and the Australian Government Department of Veterans’ Affairs’ Saluting their Service Commemorative Grants Program. Supported by the Australian War Memorial. \nRating : Mature themes and violence

SUMMARY:Festival of Small Halls Autumn Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Arcadia Theatre is an historic building in Guyra\, New South Wales\, that has been given a new life. Opened in 1929\, the theatre once hosted films\, boxing matches\, and other events. Today\, it is home to the Australian Poetry Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame was established in 2020 and aims to preserve and celebrate Australian poetry and its poets. The venue now features a large auditorium for events\, a bookshop\, an art gallery\, and a cafe. From Your Hosts: (and if this doesn’t capture your interest – nothing will!) Guyra is famous for lamb\, potatoes\, trout\, ghosts and snow. \nFestival of Small Halls will be rolling into Guyra with Tullara (AUS) and Joe H Henry (CAN). \nOpening the show will be Richard Stanley! Raised in a musical household of eleven\, music has been a lifelong companion for this Guyra-based composer and instrumentalist. Inspired by his brother Pete\, part of the Sydney band scene\, and his father’s poetry\, Richard took up the guitar before the age of 15. After a career transition into Ecotourism\, he has returned to his acoustic roots with a renewed creative focus. Richard’s current work blends a technical appreciation for the New England landscape with a deep fascination for ancient spiritual history. Now composing freely on both piano and guitar\, he captures melodies that bridge the gap between the earthly and the ancient. He is a proud member of the creative community of the New England Tablelands.
