SUMMARY:Skeptics in the Pub
DESCRIPTION:Calories and conspiracies: Trust your gut! \nSucked-in by big food and big wellness. Distinguished scientist exposes two massive cons. Award-wining biomedical scientist Associate Professor Gal Winter is set to smash “the politics of the plate” at this month’s Skeptics In the Pub. Dr Winter\, a leader at UNE in her speciality of nutrition\, will deliver a frank and fearless presentation. She will show how we are caught in a tug-of-war between two massive nutritional cons. \nShe said: “On one side\, decades of corporate lobbying gave us the carb-heavy Food Pyramid and the myth of Calories In\, Calories Out\, shifting the blame for chronic disease entirely onto consumer willpower. “On the other side\, today’s billion-dollar supplement industry and ‘wellness’ influencers are cashing in on our broken food system\, selling us expensive powders\, bio-hacks\, and magic pills to fix problems that real food and sensible eating can solve. “I will blow the whistle on the politics of the plate. “We’ll trace the history of nutritional gaslighting – from the sugar industry secretly paying off Harvard scientists in the 1960s\, to the algorithm-driven grifters flogging supplements to us today. “I will unpack the science and look at the actual physiological reality of blood glucose and our microbiome and explore why\, when faced with both Big Food and Big Wellness\, your best defence is to trust no one but your gut.” \ncal wi* Skeptics In The Pub is a volunteer-run community event affiliated with Australian Skeptics Inc which promotes critical thinking\, reason\, logic and the scientific method. \nDoors open at 5.30pm to order drinks and gourmet pizza.

SUMMARY:Sydney Symphony Performs Music that Moves You
DESCRIPTION:Hear the Sydney Symphony Orchestra perform in concert music for – and inspired by – dance. \nConductor in Residence\, Benjamin Northey\, leads the Orchestra in this program featuring captivating works by Debussy\, Stravinsky\, Kodály and Sydney’s own Holly Harrison. \nBe moved by Stravinsky’s suite from The Firebird\, an enchanting folk tale that bursts off the stage in a riot of colour and sound\, and by Zoltán Kodály’s energetic Dances of Galánta\, which draws from the folk music of Eastern Europe. Holly Harrison’s Hi-Vis recreates the buzz and energy of night-time roadworks outside her Sydney home\, while Debussy conjures a swirling\, intoxicating atmosphere in Sacred and Profane Dances\, featuring our Principal Harpist\, Louisic Dulbecco.

SUMMARY:Central West Comedy @ Welder's Dog Brewery
DESCRIPTION:Two headliner high-profile comedians. \nNick Cody brings a comedic style that’s equal parts laid-back and blunt. He dives into topics ranging from personal disasters to the oddities of modern life with the kind of confidence that can only come from years of comedy experience. Boasting a sizable fanbase of Cody devotees\, Nick has sold out shows whilst racking up rave reviews\, not only at the biggest comedy festivals Australia has to offer including Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Sydney Comedy Festival\, but also at Edinburgh Festival Fringe\, the invite-only Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal\, New York Comedy Festival and Johannesburg Comedy Festival. \nLizzy Hoo is a master of mining her life and family into material that leaves audiences left wanting more. A hilarious\, self-assured\, observational-style has resonated with comedy-goers around the world\, with Lizzy’s stand-up clips garnering millions of views online. With each passing year\, Lizzy has been exponentially growing her audience to sold out houses around Australia\, while exponentially stretching the ability to use her name as a pun with shows such as Hoo Dis?\, Hoo Cares and Woo Hoo.

Experience the best of French cinema with a selection of films! \n10.00am – Jean Valjean (M – mature themes and violence)\, 1hr 39 mins\, Drama) – Jean Valjean is released from prison after nineteen years of hard labor\, violence\, and suffering. Filled with anger and a deep sense of injustice\, he has become a dangerous man who trusts no one and nothing. When he arrives in a small village in Provence\, he is repeatedly turned away. Desperate\, he unknowingly finds refuge at the house of Bishop Bienvenu\, who lives simply\, with his sister and a single servant. There\, he is surprised by their warm welcome\, and his inner demons start to waver. But the temptation to be what society sees in him still haunts him\, and he steals the Bishop’s silverware. When the police ultimately catches him\, the Bishop forgives him and gifts him the candlesticks. This act becomes the starting point of Jean Valjean’ transformation into a new man who reclaims his humanity. \n12.30pm – A Dash of Love (M – mature themes\, coarse language and sexual references)\, 1hr 30 mins\, Comedy) – Mélanie\, a lawyer suffering from an incurable disease\, has decided it’s time to enjoy life! She whisks Benjamin\, her childhood friend\, off on a road trip to Spain to explore their sensuality in a brothel. Now here they are\, onboard a rundown van driven by Lucas\, a burly chauffeur freshly released from jail. Contrary to Mélanie\, Benjamin does not seem in any hurry to arrive. Indeed\, he does everything he can to prolong this improbable journey with his good friend. \n6.30pm – The French Job (M – coarse language)\, 1hr 34 mins\, Drama) – Jonathan\, an expert in luxury watches\, leads a grey and monotonous life until he meets Eric\, a charming conman and dealer in stolen goods. Fascinated by his lifestyle\, Jonathan is drawn deeper and deeper into the world of criminal transactions. The situation spirals out of control when the virtuoso thief Joe joins them. In 2010\, the trio committed one of the most daring robberies in history – they stole five masterpieces by Picasso\, Matisse and Modigliani from the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. \n  \n  \n
